Lemon Verbena plants are widely popular for the scent of its foliage which reminds you of lemon when scratched. Often used both in culinary and ornamental ways. Lemon Verbena’s leaves can be chopped and sprinkled on different foods adding a light lemon taste. This plant is especially common in the south due to its love for heat. This plant also provides a great source of vital nutrients. Lemon Verbena plants are also extremely popular in France where they use the herb in a variety of different ways including tea.

Scientific Background: This lemony plant was introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers from Argentina and Chile. It is in the family of Verbenaceae, along with Junellia, Urbania, and others. The produced oils from this plant have medicinal uses including those of helping the digestive system and calming people.

Scientific Name: Aloysia Triphylla

Blooms/Foliage: This plant has a deep, strong lemon scented foliage when scratched and showcases a lovely green. This plants’ leaves are narrow and are the primary producer of the plant’s oils and scent. This plant also develops small, white flowers. Lemon Verbena plants are deciduous bushes and shed their leaves in the winter.

Hardiness Zones

Verbena plants can grow pretty much anywhere where there are warm areas with lots of sunlight, particularly in southern areas. These plants are also very popular in southern North America, Central America, and South America.

Growth Habit: Lemon Verbena plants are fast-growing and can reach heights of 3′-6′. If not planted in sunny areas, Verbena plants will grow tall and spindly.

Exposure: Lemon Verbenas should be planted in an area where they are exposed to full sun. Verbenas that are grown in the shade will lack the flavor of those grown in full sunlight.

Water: Lemon Verbenas should be given plenty of water to keep their soil plenty moist. This plant should also have well-draining soil.

Spread: Place seeds or plants 2′-3′ apart when planting in the earth but when planting in pots, make sure you get a pot with a diameter of 12″.

Soil: Lemon Verbena plants do best when planted in soil that is rich in organic matter, but they are tolerant of all soils.

Potential Handling Dangers: Oils from this plant may cause the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight.

Potential Plant Dangers: Spider mites and whiteflies are pests that can potentially harm your verbena plant.
