Description
Stenocactus crispatus, often called Brain Cactus, is a compact Mexican cactus valued for its deeply folded ribs and sculptural form. Its dense, wavy ribbing creates far more texture than its small footprint suggests.
Light and Placement
Give this cactus bright light with several hours of direct sun once it is acclimated. Indoors, a bright south- or west-facing window is usually suitable. For another compact cactus with a very different silhouette, compare it with Variegated Fairy Castle Cactus.
Water and Soil
Use a fast-draining cactus mix in a container with drainage holes. Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry before watering again. Reduce watering substantially during cool, low-light periods.
Growth and Flowers
The plant stays relatively small but may produce pale pink or white flowers near the crown when mature and well grown. Its folded body makes a strong contrast beside the flat pads of Bunny Ears Cactus.
Care Notes
Avoid constantly damp soil and heavy feeding. Protect from frost and handle carefully around the spines. In a mixed succulent collection, it also pairs well visually with trailing plants such as Sedum ‘Burrito’.
