Begonia luxurians — Palm Leaf Begonia

Description

Begonia luxurians, or Palm Leaf Begonia, has long green leaves that look like palm fronds. The plant grows upright and can add height to a tropical display.

Small white flowers may appear on mature plants. The foliage is the main feature and stays attractive through the growing season.

Light

Give it bright, indirect light or light shade. Strong sun can burn the leaves. For another unusual begonia, see Begonia orococo.

Water and Soil

Use loose soil with good drainage. Water when the top of the mix starts to dry. Let extra water drain away. Do not leave the roots in wet soil. For colorful foliage, see Begonia rex ‘Spitfire’.

Warmth and Growth

Keep the plant warm and protect it from frost. Moderate humidity can help the foliage stay in good shape. Trim weak or damaged stems when needed.

Simple Care

Feed lightly while new growth is active. Check often for pests. Repot when the roots fill the pot. For another striking leaf form, see Begonia ‘Tiger Kitten’.
