Calathea lancifolia ‘Rattlesnake Plant’

Description

Calathea lancifolia, commonly called the Rattlesnake Plant, is a tropical prayer plant with long, wavy green leaves marked by dark oval patterns and rich purple undersides. Its upright, architectural foliage makes it a distinctive choice for warm indoor spaces.

This plant performs best where light is bright but filtered and humidity is moderate to high. For a finer striped look, compare it with Calathea vittata.

Light and Placement

Keep the Rattlesnake Plant out of harsh direct sun, which can fade or scorch its foliage. A bright room with indirect light is ideal. Another colorful member of this group is Calathea roseopicta ‘Angela’.

Water and Humidity

Use a well-drained potting mix that holds some moisture without staying saturated. Water when the surface begins to dry slightly, then allow excess water to drain. Dry indoor air can contribute to curling or browning leaf edges, so added humidity can help in dry rooms.

Soil, Feeding, and Repotting

A loose tropical potting mix with good aeration works well. Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertilizer as needed. Repot when the root system becomes crowded rather than automatically on a fixed yearly schedule.

Ongoing Care
