Calathea roseopicta ‘Medallion’

Description

Calathea roseopicta ‘Medallion’ is prized for broad, rounded leaves marked in layered shades of green and silver, with rich purple coloring beneath. Like other prayer plants, its foliage may shift position between day and night, adding movement as well as pattern to an indoor plant collection.

Light and Placement

Give ‘Medallion’ bright, indirect light. Strong direct sun can fade or scorch the foliage, while very low light can slow growth. If you enjoy patterned prayer plants, compare it with Calathea roseopicta ‘Angela’ or the striped foliage of Calathea vittata.

Water, Humidity, and Soil

Keep the potting mix evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water when the surface begins to dry, then let excess water drain completely. A loose, moisture-retentive mix with good aeration works well. Calatheas appreciate moderate to high humidity, especially when indoor air becomes dry.

Brown edges can come from dry air, inconsistent moisture, salt buildup, or sensitive water quality. If problems persist, using filtered, distilled, or rainwater can help. Avoid leaving the pot standing in water.

Temperature and Feeding

Warm indoor temperatures suit this tropical plant best. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature swings. During active growth, use a complete houseplant fertilizer at a conservative rate according to the label rather than feeding on a rigid calendar.

Growth and Maintenance
