Sponge Gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca)

Description

Luffa aegyptiaca, commonly called sponge gourd or luffa, is a vigorous warm-season vine grown for two very different harvests. Young fruits can be picked while tender for cooking, while fully mature fruits dry into the fibrous natural sponges that give the plant its common name.

Give luffa a long growing season, full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and a sturdy support. The vines can become large, so plan their space before planting.

For sponge production, leave fruits on the vine until they become mature and dry. Peel away the outer skin, remove seeds and loose material, rinse the fibrous interior, and let it dry thoroughly before use or storage.
