Description
Pilea microphylla ‘Variegata’ is often called Variegated Artillery Plant. It has many tiny green and cream leaves on fine stems. It looks soft and fern-like, but it is not a fern.
This small plant can fill a pot fast in warm weather. It also works well in baskets and mixed containers. Trim it when you want a tighter shape.
Light
Give it bright, indirect light or light shade. Strong sun can burn the pale leaves. Low light may reduce the cream color. For a Pilea with bold texture, see Pilea ‘Moon Valley’.
Water and Soil
Use loose soil that drains well. Water when the top starts to dry. Let extra water leave the pot. Do not let the roots stay wet. For a round-leaf Pilea, see Chinese Money Plant.
Growth and Care
Pinch long stems to keep the plant full. Cuttings can root and make new plants. Feed lightly during active growth. Keep it warm and protect it from frost.
Variegated Companions
Check the fine stems for common pests. Repot when the roots fill the pot. If you enjoy cream and green leaves, Variegated Money Plant ‘White Splash’ is another useful choice.
