Description

Tradescantia spathacea ‘Tricolor’, often called oyster plant or Moses-in-the-Cradle, is a colorful tropical valued for its sword-shaped leaves striped in green, cream, and pink. It works well as a bright houseplant, patio specimen, or warm-climate groundcover where frost is not a concern.

Its compact upright habit gives it a different look from trailing relatives such as Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Fuzzy Purple’, while the bold variegation pairs nicely with other easy foliage plants such as Syngonium ‘White Butterfly’ and Plectranthus ‘Emerald Lace’.

Light and Placement

Give the plant bright, indirect light indoors. Outdoors, morning sun with afternoon shade or bright filtered light helps maintain strong variegation without excessive leaf scorch. Low light can reduce the pink and cream coloring and encourage weaker growth.

Water and Soil

Use a loose, well-drained potting mix in a container with drainage holes. Water thoroughly, then allow the upper portion of the mix to dry before watering again. Avoid leaving the roots constantly saturated. Plants growing in brighter light and warm weather will usually dry more quickly than plants kept in cooler or dimmer conditions.

Check leaves and stems periodically for common indoor pests such as mealybugs, scale, and spider mites.
