Opuntia microdasys — Bunny Ears Cactus

Description

Opuntia microdasys, commonly called Bunny Ears Cactus, is a compact prickly pear with oval pads arranged in a branching pattern that resembles rabbit ears. Instead of long spines, the pads carry dense clusters of tiny glochids that can detach easily.

Light and Growth

Provide strong light for sturdy pads and compact growth. Indoors, use the brightest suitable window. Outdoors, acclimate gradually before moving plants into intense direct sun.

Water and Soil

Use a gritty cactus mix in a container with drainage holes. Water thoroughly and then allow the root zone to dry well. Reduce watering during cooler weather and never leave the pot standing in water.

Safe Handling

Glochids look soft but are barbed and irritating. Handle the plant with tongs or thick gloves, keep it away from walkways, and avoid placing it where children or pets can brush against the pads.
