Bougainvillea ‘California Gold’

Description

Bougainvillea ‘California Gold’ is a vigorous tropical vine prized for glowing golden-yellow bracts that surround its small true flowers. In warm climates it can cover a trellis, fence, or wall, while regular pruning keeps it manageable in a large patio container.

Light and Flowering

Grow ‘California Gold’ in full sun for the strongest flowering and brightest bract color. Too much shade encourages leafy growth with fewer blooms.

Soil and Water

Use fast-draining soil and avoid keeping the root zone constantly wet. Water regularly while plants establish, then allow the upper portion of the soil or potting mix to dry somewhat between thorough waterings.

Training and Pruning

Long shoots can be tied loosely to a sturdy support and trimmed after a flowering cycle to control size. For a contrasting bougainvillea palette, pair the golden bracts with ‘Imperial Thai Delight’ or the vivid magenta-red color of ‘Barbara Karst’.

Containers and Cold Weather

Routine Care

Feed only as needed during active growth, avoid excessive nitrogen, and protect the root system from prolonged saturation. Mature plants tolerate dry periods better than newly planted specimens, but container-grown plants still need regular moisture checks in hot weather.
