Description
Hoya obovata variegata ‘Splash’ combines thick rounded foliage with cream variegation and silvery splash markings. Mature vines can also produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers. It works well trailing from a shelf or basket, or trained upward on a hoop or trellis.
Light and Placement
Bright, indirect light helps maintain strong growth and variegation. Gentle morning or late-day sun can be useful, but intense midday sun may scorch pale leaf areas. If you enjoy variegated wax plants, compare Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’.
Water and Potting Mix
Use a coarse, fast-draining mix and a pot with drainage holes. Water thoroughly after much of the mix has dried, then allow excess water to escape. Thick Hoya leaves store moisture, so constantly wet soil can create more problems than an occasional short dry period.
Training and Blooming
Vines can trail naturally or be guided onto a support. Avoid removing old flower spurs after blooming because Hoyas can flower again from the same peduncles. Bright light, steady warmth, healthy roots, and maturity are more important for flowering than using a high-phosphorus bloom booster.
For a different climbing tropical with bold foliage, see Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’. A coir totem plant support can also be useful when training vigorous indoor vines upward.
Feeding and Maintenance
Feed lightly during active growth with a complete fertilizer according to label directions. Prune only as needed to control size or remove damaged growth. Stem cuttings with at least one healthy node can be rooted for propagation.
A Distinctive Variegated Hoya
The combination of rounded succulent foliage, variable cream coloring, silver splash, and the possibility of fragrant blooms makes Hoya obovata variegata ‘Splash’ an appealing plant for collectors and bright indoor displays.
