Saxifraga stolonifera ‘Variegata’ — Variegated Strawberry Begonia

Description

Saxifraga stolonifera ‘Variegata’, commonly called Variegated Strawberry Begonia, is not a true begonia. It is a trailing saxifrage with rounded variegated leaves, red-toned undersides, and runners that form small plantlets.

Light and Placement

Give it bright, indirect light indoors or filtered shade outdoors. Its spreading habit works especially well in hanging baskets and shaded containers. For a true foliage begonia with similar indoor appeal, see Begonia rex ‘Froggy’.

Water and Soil

Use a loose, well-drained potting mix and water when the surface begins to dry. Keep the plant evenly moist during active growth without leaving the roots saturated.

Trailing Growth

Runners naturally produce small plantlets that can root when they touch moist mix. For another compact shade plant with bold foliage, compare it with Calathea ‘Medallion’.

Care Notes

Protect from hot direct sun and hard frost. Trim excess runners if you want a tidier plant, or let them cascade. Pilea ‘Dark Mystery’ is another useful choice for a small foliage grouping.
