Description
Selenicereus anthonyanus ‘Ric-Rac’, also called Fishbone Cactus, is a tropical epiphytic cactus with flattened zigzag stems that spill attractively from hanging baskets and elevated containers.
Unlike desert cacti, it prefers bright, indirect light and a loose, airy mix that drains quickly while retaining a little moisture. For another trailing succulent with a very different texture, see Sedum morganianum ‘Burrito’.
Growing Ric-Rac Cactus
Water thoroughly, then allow the upper portion of the growing mix to dry before watering again. Warm temperatures, good drainage, and gentle airflow help keep the stems healthy.
Its cascading habit works especially well in baskets. If you enjoy unusual succulent forms, Stapelia gigantea offers another distinctive collector plant with dramatic flowers.
Flowers and Propagation
Mature plants can produce large, fragrant night-opening flowers. Healthy stem sections can be allowed to callus briefly and then rooted in a lightly moist, well-drained propagation mix.
For another unusual cactus with strong architectural form, compare it with Acanthocereus tetragonus ‘Variegated Fairy Castle’.
