Description

Ajuga reptans ‘Mahogany’ is a low, spreading perennial. Its leaves mix green, bronze, and deep red tones. Blue flower spikes rise above the leaves in spring.

This plant works well as a groundcover. It can fill bare soil under shrubs, edge a path, or spill from a pot. For a smaller leaf and darker look, see Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’.

Light and Soil

Give ‘Mahogany’ part sun to shade. In hot areas, shade in the afternoon can help keep the leaves fresh. Use moist soil that drains well.

Space plants so they have room to spread. Water new plants often enough to keep the root zone moist. Once rooted, they need less care.

A Colorful Groundcover

Ajuga spreads by short runners. Trim runners that move past the space you want to cover. You can also compare its rich tones with Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’, which has bright mixed foliage.

Spring flowers add a strong blue accent. The low leaves also pair well with taller shade plants. For a silver-green choice, try Ajuga ‘Silver Queen’.

Simple Care

Keep the soil from staying wet for long periods. Remove old flower stems after bloom if you want a neat look. Divide crowded mats when needed.

‘Mahogany’ is a useful choice for beds, borders, and shady garden spaces. Its low habit and dark leaf color give the ground a full, finished look.
