Begonia, Starburst

Begonia, Starburst

Rex begonia is a popular fancy-leaf begonia usually grown in containers and as a houseplant. Rhizomatous begonia hybrid has a tight mounding form and sharply defined, star-shaped leaves. Leaves have speckled, red veins contrasting with a golden hue. Grows 6-10″ tall. Begonias are herbaceous succulent plants that hail from the tropics.

Rhizomatous begonias grow nicely when given adequate light without strong direct sun. Rex begonias are herbaceous perennials in USDA zones 10-12, so they are more commonly grown as houseplants or annuals. Begonias are perhaps one of the most enduring and traditional houseplants you’ll come across. Begonias are excellent houseplants with an incredible ability to bounce back from the brink of death.

Moderate to bright indirect light.

Water weekly allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between watering. Keep watered consistently and deeply. Applying a liquid houseplant fertilizer according to the package instructions every two weeks will encourage bigger leaves and blooms.

Will tolerate dry air but prefer high humidity. Avoid misting, which can lead to problems with powdery mildew.

Average home temperature of 65°F-75°F. If you’re comfortable, the Rex Begonia is comfortable.
